"Greta" (2018) – Film Summary & Overview

Director: Neil Jordan
Starring: Isabelle Huppert, Chloë Grace Moretz, Maika Monroe
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Runtime: 98 minutes

🧠 Plot Summary:

Frances McCullen (Chloë Grace Moretz), a kind-hearted young woman new to New York City, finds a seemingly lost handbag on the subway and decides to return it to its owner. That owner is Greta Hideg (Isabelle Huppert), a lonely and eccentric French woman living alone in a quiet part of the city.

The two form a quick friendship, with Greta taking on a maternal role toward Frances, who is still grieving the recent loss of her mother. However, things take a disturbing turn when Frances discovers a closet full of identical handbags—each with a name and number, suggesting she is not Greta’s first “friend.”

As Greta’s true, obsessive nature is revealed, Frances finds herself being stalked and manipulated in increasingly terrifying ways.

🪞 Themes & Style:

  • Obsession & loneliness: Explores how emotional vulnerability can be exploited.

  • Female psychological horror: Centers on women in both predator and victim roles.

  • Cat-and-mouse tension: Similar to thrillers like Misery or Single White Female.

  • Stylish, Gothic atmosphere with moments of surrealism and dread.

🌟 Highlights:

  • Isabelle Huppert’s performance as Greta is chilling, elegant, and unhinged — often shifting between charming and terrifying with ease.

  • Direction by Neil Jordan (The Crying Game, Interview with the Vampire) adds a moody, suspenseful tone.

  • Slow-burn thriller with a creepy, escalating sense of danger.

🎬 Fun Facts:

  • The film had its world premiere at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

  • Isabelle Huppert reportedly improvised several of Greta’s most intense moments, adding to the character’s unpredictability.

  • The story plays on classic fairy-tale tropes: the young girl, the seemingly kind older woman, and the dark twist.

Debora Caprioglio in  Paprika  (1991) – Performance Review Tinto Brass’s  Paprika   (1991) is an erotic drama set in post-WWII Italy, and at its center is Debora Caprioglio in a role that is as visually commanding as it is emotionally layered. She plays Mimma, a young woman who takes on the name “Paprika” as she enters a brothel to earn money for her fiancé’s business, only to discover far more about life, desire, and betrayal than she anticipated. 🎭  Caprioglio’s Performance Debora Caprioglio, then in her early twenties, brings both youthful innocence and sensual confidence to the screen. Her physical beauty, often emphasized by Brass’s famously indulgent camera, is undeniable—but what elevates her performance is how she uses vulnerability and restraint to offset the overt eroticism. Caprioglio’s Mimma begins the film naive, but over the course of the story, we see her transition through bitterness, resilience, and finally, self-empowerment. In th...
