🎬 Knock Knock (2015) – Film Summary & Review
🎞️ Directed by: Eli Roth
Starring: Keanu Reeves, Lorenza Izzo, Ana de Armas
Genre: Psychological Thriller / Horror
Runtime: 99 minutes
Tagline: Some doors should never be opened.
📝 Plot Summary:
Evan Webber (Keanu Reeves) is a devoted husband and father who stays home for the weekend while his wife and kids are away. During a stormy night, two young women—Genesis (Lorenza Izzo) and Bel (Ana de Armas)—show up at his door, claiming to be lost and looking for help.
What starts as a seemingly innocent gesture of kindness quickly turns into a nightmare of seduction, manipulation, and psychological torture. The women seduce Evan, and after he gives in, they reveal their twisted motives: to punish men who cheat, by destroying their lives for fun.
What follows is a disturbing game of cat-and-mouse where Evan is tied up, humiliated, gaslighted, and ultimately left questioning everything about morality, consent, and consequence.
🎭 Tone & Style:
-
A slow-burning home invasion thriller with a psychosexual twist
-
Builds tension with dialogue, awkwardness, and moral ambiguity rather than gore
-
Darkly satirical in tone—some scenes verge on campy or absurd
🌟 Performances:
-
Keanu Reeves plays a rare victim role, delivering a performance that shifts from calm to frantic and desperate. Some of his lines have become internet memes due to their over-the-top delivery ("It was free pizza!").
-
Ana de Armas and Lorenza Izzo are convincing as seemingly innocent girls who transform into sadistic tormentors. Ana in particular shows early signs of the charisma that would lead to major stardom (Blade Runner 2049, Knives Out).
💬 Themes:
-
Temptation and consequence: What happens when someone gives in to a moment of weakness?
-
Consent, gender dynamics, and power reversal
-
Moral punishment vs. psychopathy
-
The illusion of control and domestic safety
🧠 Fun Facts:
-
A remake of the 1977 exploitation film Death Game (also starring Colleen Camp and Sondra Locke, both of whom appear as producers in this version).
-
Shot in Chile on a low budget in just 18 days.
-
Directed by Eli Roth, known for horror films like Hostel and The Green Inferno.
🎥 Verdict:
Knock Knock is divisive—some view it as an uncomfortable cautionary tale with feminist undertones, while others see it as exploitative or overly ridiculous. It’s not your typical horror film, and its message is murky at best. But it does deliver tension, psychological discomfort, and a memorable “what-would-you-do” premise.
⭐ Rating: 5.5–6/10
