Set among the wealthy elite of Manhattan's Upper East Side, Cruel Intentions follows two manipulative step-siblings, Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe), who engage in a dangerous game of seduction and deceit.
Kathryn challenges Sebastian to deflower the virtuous Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), the daughter of their school’s new headmaster, who has publicly declared she will wait until marriage. If Sebastian succeeds, he can sleep with Kathryn. If he fails, Kathryn gets his prized car.
As Sebastian schemes to seduce Annette, he unexpectedly falls in love with her, complicating his plans and threatening his relationship with Kathryn. Meanwhile, Kathryn is manipulating others—including the naïve Cecile Caldwell (Selma Blair)—as pawns in her social chess game.
The web of lies unravels into betrayal, heartbreak, and ultimately tragedy.
